Well, if they plug in with an HDMI, you ought to be able to plug that into
your AV system instead, right?

I think I've got the opposite ATM: the TV is the switcher for video input,
with the AppleTV/XBMC as one source, the cable box as a second, and analog
jacks running from the VCR. It has output/monitor feeds for audio that go
into the amp, which can source the TV or radio or disc sources.

What's your AV system. Mines an older unit, and I don't think it switches
HiDef all that well, which is how our system ended up the way it did.

I'm not a fan of iTunes -- I've heard complaints about the recent UI change
-- as I think the open stuff has all the capabilities and doesn't get you
tangled up in licenses and registering etc.
