Back when data-entry involved punch cards or paper-tape there was always a separate validation run by a different operative. Some errors still got through, but very very few. I see no reason other than cost saving why this should be discontinued just because the equipment has changed. Good form design also plays a part e.g. date and currency fields should be clearly identifiable by their layout.
