Ted,
Apologies on that, it is SmallDateTime that has been deprecated in SQL 2012.
However the approved and suggested advice is to actually use DateTime 
everywhere as Date will at some time always go the same way.

Are you referring to Microsoft/Sybase SQL Server, MySQL, or all SQL engines 
based on the SQL Standard, such as it is?
