Twenty years ago, I used to teach "Introduction to Computers" at a training
company and gave just that explanation for what a modem is.  Just the other
day, a coworker brought up your very question.  Misnomer or not, I believe
that we are stuck with that name for, at least, until communication is
achieved through something other than a visible box.  Keep that in mind when
you are "dialing" your push button phone <g>.
