You might review Tamar's "Creating Helpful User Interfaces" which includes
example code. She has an autocomplete text box that might be close to what
you're looking for.

IMO, Combos are good for limited choices (Red, Green, Blue) but if the use
case is a lot of data, and a lot of new entry, they're awkward.
