It's a long shot, but I've been working up a lot of WAGs lately: Check the configuration of the suspect machine. Especially Control Panel, User Accounts (which is different in each version, grr..) In one case, one user had a "Roaming" profile, which causes all of their local processing that involved files to be duplicated on the server, slowing everything to a crawl.
