Use the iPad. My wife does and it is great for reading, except in sunlight. Get the calibre app for converting other ebook formats and PDFs. If you didn't have the iPad, I like an Android tablet. Good eBook software for any format including PDFs.
I prefer a tablet, as a multi-function device for watching movies, etc. also. Personally, I like a big one (10-11").
