That's certainly an issue. I know my clients simply go out to the
office store and buy machines with "Windows" on them. There's an
expectation you're getting the same thing you bought the last time,
and it just isn't fulfilled.
And little, if any, warning. With lots of features, how can
one reasonably check that something has not been messed up?
One minor example is the left pane in Windows Explorer. Under
XP, clicking on a directory name resulted in the directory contents
being displayed in the right pane. This made it quick to navigate a
path. Under 7, one has to double-click each time. It slows
navigation. Why the change?
And it's not just ignorant consumers. We techies get caught by
"deprecated" APIs all the time.
Yup.
When I were a lad ... there sure were not nearly so many
programming languages and environments.
