One of the first things that my first computer teacher (in high
school) said was that computers were so expensive, no one person
could hope to own one. That was a bit of hyperbole even then, but
pretty close for the typical person. I used to spend my allowance
money on computer time at UBC to use their mainframe. That was in
the mid-'70s. (I still remember their announcement about them
doubling the memory on their mainframe from four to eight *megabytes*.)
