I also was saddened by the impending removal of tab groups, Gene. You may have 
noticed in the banner notification that there is an add-on that keeps the 
functionality in FF and I installed it. Seems to work just like the native one 
so far.

      I am looking for an alternative.  Firefox screwed up tabs with version 
29.  (The ergonomics are horrible for me.)  Now, I find that they are about to 
remove tab groups which I use heavily.  I have used Firefox since version 
0.9something.
