An explanation of why things go wrong with machines...

    * There is a God for machines.
    * This 'God' grants all machines a brownie point for every day it
      works.  Complex machines made from lots of components (simple
      machines) therefore gain lots of brownie points per day (e.g. a Car!)
    * All machines can trade in these brownie points for 'something'. 
      The bigger the 'something' the more points it has to use.
    * For a car this 'something' could be "Doesn't start first time in
      the morning" (for a relatively few points) to "Engine seizes on
      roundabout in rush hour during thunderstorm" (luckily a huge
      number of points).
    * The upshot of this is that if you have a machine that has lots of
      little faults then it is using up its points, however you should
      worry about anything that works reliably as it is obviously SAVING
      UP FOR SOMETHING BIG!
