Virgil, we live in a democracy but our government is a that of a Republic. Our congressional representatives are free to vote however they choose regardless of what the majority of their constituencies prefer. Our President is elected by the Electoral College and as such, someone with a plurality of individual citizens' votes can lose the election. Just thought I would clarify that in case you'd forgotten.
