Alright, here goes. I'll give ya'll the secret documents I've been hoarding
on this wifi stuff. You can go to
http://radiolabs.com/Articles/wifi-antenna.html to read a very good doc on
wifis and hit their main page for a bunch of other stuff. The offer quite a
few different antennas and once I found an 18dbi I promptly went to ebay and
bought a pair for about 12 bucks! I have 6 computers on a wireless lan in my
house (one is in the guest house) and each can access with 56mb signal
strength. I can take my laptop out to the patio or in the driveway and it
works fine. I guess you could probably find some of that other stuff on ebay
too, or just breakdown and shell out the bucks to radiolabs.com

If you need to reach out over distance they offer a parabolic grid antenna
that will probably suffice. Here's there words on the subject:

http://www.radiolabs.com/products/antennas/2.4gig/stage6.php

"If you had this on a very tall hill or mountain and the same antenna at a
distance of 80+ miles, your name would be on the record, guaranteed! The
Stage 6 is the highest gain antenna we, or anyone else offers for WiFi,
802.11 or WLAN."

I sent this info to Chris Jefferies last summer and he is going to install
some of this stuff on his buddy's ranch in Montana. (Dennis Quaid) I guess
if he ever gets it done I'll get a report on how it worked.

Here is an interesting project that can increase the range of a wireless
router by a mile or more.
