The kid was 17 years old. He built up an imaginary woman in his mind and reality could not compete with his imagination. Emotions are at their most raw when a person is a teenager, and I think teenage boys are more vulnerable than girls even though conventional wisdom says the opposite. There are a lot of suicides in the teen years over things that the rest of us all know are temporary problems.
