VNC is free and doesn't rely on a 3rd party (which can be a bad thing
when there's a firewall or 2 in the way).

Agreed.  Remote Desktop (aka Terminal Services) is *much* faster than
anything else as it works at a lower lever.
VNC,PCAnywhere,RemotelyAnywhere,DeskShare,LogMeIn... all work by
taking screenshots and sending them to the client.

Remote Desktop is quite usable over a 33.6K modem link.
