It's really quite senseless if you use something like Gmail that collapses quoted text anyways-- particularly bottom-quoted. It leaves the specifically quoted stuff often-times-- the stuff that was skillfully quoted to show context. Oh, and as for showing context, I think it's definitely best in case messages get lost, come in in the wrong order, or just some really embarassing mis-interpretations that some might make without explicitly setting context. It's kinda like someone leaving a phone message talking about many things, and then you calling back and answering their questions without saying, "oh, and about ...."-- it could be woefully mis-interpretted. "yes, yes, no, sometimes, only if ...".
