Hi Leland!

Millions of "year" ago they kept temperature records with an abacus, similar 
in some respects to using Excel for data. While this was fairly accurate, it 
did have a certain subjectivity about it, sad to say, and really old 
temperature records are not useful for research, as David alluded to.
