Ricardo, I'm not 100% sure but my old Latin teacher said the term arose from the Latin expression "Quid Pro Quo", meaning "this for that".
When you buy you exchange money for goods or services i.e "this for that". Maybe others could confirm this or shoot it down in flames, but as an [OT] session perhaps.
