Whatever inclination I might have to do something like that, I have to keep
my eye on the goal: to get the house built.

The court calendar in California for civil suits is running 3 years out
right now. I have talked to another general contractor about taking over our
project so we can terminate our current contract, but he doesn't want to
step on our current contractor's toes. It is a small group of people in the
industry, and it isn't that easy to just dump a contractor and pick up
another one on the front steps of Home Depot.

Believe me, I've been checking all of our options carefully. I don't want to
be stupid about this. Some of the available options are just too expensive
to pursue, and are not worth doing. Just like when I got divorced the first
time. I knew my ex had been buying up diamond engagement rings from people
that had ads in the newspaper, and that he was stashing them in a safe
deposit box. My lawyer, though, asked me how much I thought they were worth,
told me what it would cost to prove they were there and get a cost estimate
and get half that asset, and I decided not to try to get them. I walked away
knowing that my ex-husband took me for a ride, but also knowing that it was
cheaper to let him do that than it was to fight.

Some fights are not worth fighting. Some fights are in fact best resolved by
owning up to your 1% culpability in the face of the other guy's 99%
culpability and simply making the choice to walk away a loser. Sometimes you
win by losing. That's my belief, at any rate.

That said, I am still checking my options and I am not just sitting still
for someone hammering me in the head while I'm already overwhelmed with a
husband in a rehab center. The goal is to get the house done. I have no
intent to let that contractor continue to mess with getting the house done.
The contractor is not going to just walk all over me.
