It looks like Verizon turned on some new "SPAM" filter which ended up blocking all messages from auto-forward email account. Of course they did this without notifying/asking anyone (they must be taking lessons from Microsoft). But now, after a few rather terse words with them on the phone and a few dozen "web page wastes of time" they appear to have it straightened out.
