I have an old Thinkpad that originally came with Win95.
At some point I did a clean install of Win2k on it.
Later I inadvisedly did an upgrade to WinXP.
At bootup it still offers 2000 or XP - out of curiosity I just selected
2000 instead of the default XP:
it came up OK (one error message about a missing file) including the old
users' directories, but appeared to think it was a new install (did I want
to configure IE, Outlook &c.)

Hence the question - is XP just a few extra eye-candy bits added to Win2k?
- If not where has Win2k been hiding? (there is only one disk partition,
also if I move files e.g. to C:\ when in Win2k the changes are still there
in XP.

And if XP isn't really there what about Vista?
