Individuals that make up the core development team of PostgreSQL all
have positions with companies that pay them a salary. Tom Lang, who
heads the core development of PostgreSQL is an employee of Red Hat Linux
for example. Although Tom works for Red Hat, his position with them is
closely tied to PostgreSQL. Most of the other core team members also
have positions with companies working in positions related to
PostgreSQL. Some income to the contributors to PostgreSQL comes from
talks given at conferences, which generates income from referrals, etc.
Much support comes from contributers who have developed third party
add-ons to PostgreSQL.

Many companies that want choices regarding OS, and don't want to see
Microsoft corner the OS market with subsequent extravagant monopolistic
pricing, have contributed time, energy and money to PostgreSQL. Almost
all the companies that are strong supporters of Linux like IBM HP, etc,
also are strong supporters of PostgreSQL, as it is a key component of
Linux. Recently Sun has become a major supporter of PostgreSQL. Sun
has adopted PostgreSQL as its Solaris OS database.
