Pop open a shell/terminal and type:

 ps ax|grep ntpd

If you get a response that looks something like:

 3112 ?        Ss     0:00 ntpd -u ntp:ntp -p /var/run/ntpd.pid -g
 8776 pts/2    R+     0:00 grep ntpd

You're already running it.
