I think there's only one OS (out of many) where that is the case.

The DLSLUG presentation last week was showing exactly that: SATA
drives in a Dell external exclosure running on a PCI-X controller
yielded nearly a gigaBYTE per second throughput when running ZFS under
Solaris/OpenSolaris. 7.5 terabytes online for $17k. Running Renesys'
business. Awesome technology.
