Whilst I don't have any codebase that does what you've described, I sense
you are on the right track.

OTOH, via automation to Word via VFP,
you should be able to extract the image,
convert it to png file type, also reducing the dpi and color depth (who
needs 16 million colours on an image where 256 colors is more than
adequate?)  and put it back,
replacing what was there.

I wish I had the exact answer for you, but if I were chasing it, that's
the overall approach I'd use.
