Though I run XP and Virtual PC, I understand VMWare Player runs faster than QEMU. The testing I did with the VMWare player allowed access to some external devices, and you can prevent the NIC from being included.
I know to developers that run some flavor of linux, and have W2K setup in the VMWare player like you want, for VFP development. Since they are using VFP 9, they were grumbling they couldn't use W98 which has a smaller footprint.
