It always sounds good.  But the fact is summarized by the old saying, 
"socialism won't work because 
socialists won't work".  Everyone wants to be on the receiving end, but there 
just aren't enough people around who are willing to sacrifice their welfare for 
the good of society... nor should there be!

The reason socialized anything yields crappy service is that there is no 
alternative, but there is job security.

Oh yes... let me correct what I said above... we do have some among us who are 
willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of society... our military, 
police, firefighters and the like.  No, there are no academics or editorial 
writers and TV commentators in that group!  Not even any politicians.
