No I dont. good point. But I must add that the backups are done overnight
when no one is there so its not really the same issue. But flock would be
best for doing backups where that is not the case in my opinion.

I do that as well.  Do you put an FLOCK on the tables prior so that you
somewhat lock out changes briefly?
