Your dogs would classified as a guard dogs. The Rat Terrier I have, (eg Anna), is a very good watch dog, and perhaps to a lessor extent a guard dog. The Rat Terrier earned their name because they are so fast and quick, and very good at keeping the rodent population down (eg http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/ratterrier.htm).
