Michael,
I had the same request from a client and ended up with bespoke icons -LARGE
ones inside a container held on the main screen. 

The user can set up their own "home page content" by dragging a selection of
icons into the container which is then saved for when they restart. It works
really well and is foolproof (almost!)

Client wants more than just the main menu pulldowns....would you suggest 
using a toolbar class of sorts or perhaps a form that is anchored, or 
something else?  This will be the "driver" to the main parts of the 
application.
