I was thinking the same thing. In edit/run/edit mode, I save literally
once a minute probably (so I can compile and run the code). In longer
development cycles, such as making larger changes, I make sure and hit
:w (vim for 'save') fairly often, every 5 minutes at least. It is just
habit.

And when I step away for lunch or the end of day, I commit all my
changes to source control, with a descriptive commit message of what's
changed and why, with an additional 'interim commit' message so I'll
know in the future that this revision isn't complete.

It takes a few minutes to write those commit messages, but it is worth
it to see that summary later, and as a bonus I can then usually
copy/paste the entry to my time and billing software - I like to give my
clients lots of details on the invoice to justify the time I'm spending.

YMMV
Paul
