I use to summer on Block Island back in the 60's and part of the 70's BI is between Nantucket and Long Island. I use to watch the America's Cup off our front porch. As I remember you can take a train from any major city to the ports that have ferry service to either Island. You don't need to rent a car and ferry it over and back. On the island of choice you take a cab to the hotel. >From there you can rent bicycle or moped/scooter to get around.
