I have a Dell Latitude D820. I usually buy a pretty good machine and then use it for 3-5 years before buying another. My current machine is a little over 2 years old. I put a lot of RAM, better DVD, extra batteries, port replicator, broadband modem, and other features in my machine, and then I get Steve the same machine minus most of the extras. It makes it easier on me to have us both on essentially the same machine.
I used to get computers more frequently and give Steve hand-me-downs like JH does, but I've changed the way I work these days in part because I don't have the same budget I had a few years ago. Plus I'm home a lot more because I no longer take on-site contracts. I just don't have what it takes to spend 3 hours a day in a car any more.
