I'm talking about a directory similar to my
/home/leland/.moxilla/firefox/82a42b0y.default
directory. The name Firefox hashed out for my directory was 82a42b0y.default .
 Each
directory installed would have its own .default part of the directory name, but
Firefox
would hash out a different alpha numeric code preceding the .default for
everybody;
because, this directory could hold a lot of personal and sensitive information
like
passwords to access various web sites for example.

I change the name of the directory I provided in this post to keep the real
name of my
.default directory secret.

Firefox is very good about maintaining forward and backward compatibility, but
it's not
perfect. Whenever I upgrade to the latest version of Fedora, I always do a
mirror image
backup of the current install. Once the new version of Fedora is installed, I
mount the
hard drive with the mirror image of the old install and copy the .firefox and
.thunderbird
directories to my new home directory. The next time I start firefox and
thunderbird in
the new Fedora, they will have all the old setting, bookmarks, passwords,
everything.
I've never had a problem with Firefox not be forward and backward compatible,
and its just
that easy.

There are many people that write Firefox extensions and addon, so if there are
problems,
it may be up to them to maintain of there work with the latest release of
Firefox.
