The "it can't happen here" or "we're too civilized for such things now"
mentality is how we got to this place to begin with.

I don't defend Bush or the Republicans. I parted ways with them with Harriet
Miers and the Prescription Drug entitlement boondoggle, respectively. In
retrospect I should have done it a lot sooner. Given how little we actually
got in terms of gratitude -- forget oil and wealth -- from liberating Iraq,
I view that now as a wasted effort in a strategic sense. I view the two
party system now rather like a World Wrestling Federation show. The good
guys and bad guys alternate, putting on that they hate each other, but
behind the scenes they are laughing all the way to the bank.

Except now they're consolidating all wealth in one bank, one giant trough
they and their cronies can drink from, without any pretense of a free, open
or transparent system anymore. There has never been a greater chasm between
what the Constitution says and what our government does and how it operates
-- if it was warped under Bush, it has been summarily done away with under
Obama.

The warning signs are there, red flags waving in the wind. I guess I just
need to man up to the fact that the republic is dead, and neither I nor my
children will enjoy liberty or prosperity the rest of our lives--everything
now is about pursuit of survival, not pursuit of happiness. The truth is
nobody else cares or wants to see what's happening for what it is. :(
