The report was clear. He was booked for disorderly conduct, long after he established his residence in the home. This disorderly conduct took what would have been a simple matter of checking ID and saying have a nice day and made it a far more drawn out affair. If you were a cop investigating this situation, you'd have to wonder why the guy was acting like such a dick. Was something maybe going on after all? What could it be? Where was the second guy? The officer cataloged all his thoughts as he described what happened. The officer seemed pretty convinced early on Gates was the owner. Why then the insults, accusations, and outright jackass behavior? He warned Gates several times before booking him, and even gave him deference with respect to handcuffing on account of his supposed handicap. And they even dropped the charges out of respect for his esteemed position, though personally I think that was an act of political correctness that served no real purpose: Gates should have been prosecuted like anybody else acting like an asshole in this situation. If you get pulled over by a state trooper and start getting antagonistic, (s)he's got every reason to take what could be a simple warning about your going over the speed limit and turn it into a big fuck-you ticket, especially if you immediately start impugning the officer's motives. The officer will drag your ass out of your car, frisk you and give the trunk of your car an enima if you poor the insults on like Gates was. He or she will find every little violation imaginable --- missing tags, expired license, a busted headlight, you name it --- and pile it on. But usually if you're just honest with the officer, they'll let you go with a warning (unless you were really speeding fast). Some state troopers really are assholes -- like the rest of the population, where assholes are also a clear majority -- but they have protocol. Gates, if he's such an experienced hand at being a victim of police brutality, certainly should know this protocol, and could have easily assured the officer everything was OK. Instead, he attacked him. The only person acting stupidly in this scenario was Gates. Obama had it precisely backwards. Why this matter is so confusing to you, I cannot answer. - Bob > > > > --- StripMime Report -- processed MIME parts --- > multipart/alternative > text/plain (text body -- kept) > text/html > --- > [excessive quoting removed by server] _______________________________________________ Post Messages to: [email protected] Subscription Maintenance: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/[email protected] ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice.
