How many transactions per minute will this system be handling?

Subject: Advice

Hi Guys,

I need some advice on a hardware spec.

My client has just had the requirement to make simple selections from a
database containing about 11 million records, about 3.5Gb. Obviously this
is well outside VFP's limits so I have looked at PostgreSQL and am quite
impressed. I have managed to set it up and import data and then make simple
selections using SPT.

He is looking to buy a new workstation for this job. It will be networked
in a small peer-to-peer system. The data will be downloaded every quarter
and will then be imported in to a PostgreSQL table. The data will not be
changed in any way. Selections will be made using SPT from a front end I
will build in VFP9. The selection will be saved as a text file which will
then be imported into an existing VFP app for further processing. All of
the action will take place on the new workstation. He has asked for my help
in specifying the new workstation. Cost is an issue so I don't want to make
the spec any higher than necessary. RAID is not required, nor backup, as
the data can be downloaded again at any time. The selections are processed
almost immediately and the files then discarded. My first instinct is a
dual-core processor with as much RAM as possible, perhaps 8Gb, however I
remember an instance about 10 years ago when we gave machines so much RAM it
slowed them down as they were spending more time managing the memory than
they were processing and I don't want that to occur again.

Any comments on the spec gratefully received.
