I don't think that this was a limitation; I think that this was a
design decision. I've noticed that people who find this a problem tend to be
experienced computer users/developers who are looking at this as a netbook
alternative, and I think that's not what sort of product they're defining. Jobs
was pretty clear that this is not a laptop alternative.
