Part of my new gig here at the hospital is to administer and update our
much used intranet. It's the usual mish mash of every department wanting
their own info and doing their own thing w/ document uploads, links
etc... let's just say some users are more capable than others in layout
and design, so a large portion of all these updates falls to me....

I used Sharepoint a bit where I used to work and I can't say I was
overly impressed, but it did in fact work and was relied on heavily.

With all the servers and software we run here and at our corporate
mother ship I wouldn't be too surprised to find out we already have
access to the licensed software, or it could be had for cheap.

BUT, if I couldn't (or can't) use Sharepoint, is there anything else out
there that someone would recommend?

Chances are I'd have to run this on a Windows based server - Linux might
be a tough sell around here....

Thanks,
