A key piece of evidence in climate change science was slammed as
“exaggerated” on Wednesday by the UK’s leading statistician, in a
vindication of claims that global warming sceptics have been making
for years.

Professor David Hand, president of the Royal Statistical Society, said
that a graph shaped like an ice hockey stick that has been used to
represent the recent rise in global temperatures had been compiled
using “inappropriate” methods.

“It used a particular statistical technique that exaggerated the
effect [of recent warming],” he said.

The criticism came as part of a report published on Wednesday that
found the scientists behind the “Climategate” e-mail scandal had
behaved “honestly and fairly” and showed “no evidence of any
deliberate scientific malpractice”.

The last paragraph contradicts the thrust of the whole report, but
whatever. At least some statisticians are finally weighing in on the
fraud of the hockey stick graph, the manufacturing of which was very
much a subject of "hiding the decline" as discussed in those emails.

"It ought never to be forgotten, that a firm union of this country,
under an efficient government, will probably be an increasing object
of jealousy to more than one nation of Europe; and that enterprises to
subvert it will sometimes originate in the intrigues of foreign
powers, and will seldom fail to be patronized and abetted by some of
them. Its preservation, therefore ought in no case that can be
avoided, to be committed to the guardianship of any but those whose
situation will uniformly beget an immediate interest in the faithful
and vigilant performance of the trust." [Federalist Papers #59]
