Hi,

I am definitely not a techy when it comes to the ins and outs of PC
hardware, but my mother's PC (probably 8 years old Windows XP) is giving
some trouble so it ended up with me to advise on it. I know I've seen
some advice here, so hoping for some help.

The symptoms are:

1. When the PC is powered on, the green power light comes on and nothing
else. Nothing on the monitor. If left, it could just sit there for hours.

2. If I press the reset button from this state, we then get the boot up
screen and a warning about "Please re-setting the cpu frequency in
cmos". If we press F1 as instructed, the PC continues and boots up fine.

3. Prior to this she had been getting messages about the hard drive
being full. She has a 40GB drive with two partitions , 10GB for Windows
and programs which was almost full (I have now cleared it down to have
just less than 1GB free).

4. The first time a problem was encountered, the PC would not start up
but we would hear a beep. I no longer get that beep.

Any ideas on what to check?
