Most important thing with matrix - get a high-end Oki or Epson and DON'T LET THEM SKIMP ON IT!
In terms of printing, install the drivers then read the manual and find out what internal fonts the printer uses. These will appear in the font lists in the VFP report designer with a little printer icon beside them. Pick a monospaced one and use that, and only that, on the layout.
