I would counsel against VFP5 - it was somewhat rudimentary and full of 
bugs.  If you have compatibility or resource usage problems with all the 
old hardware, then VFP 6.0 is the oldest version I would consider.  It 
was also the first really stable version.

Unless there are reasons why your hardware won't run it, VFP 9 is still 
the way to go.
