We use Trillian. It does AOL, ICQ, etc. and is free.

We use something called Softros LAN Messenger here.   Pretty basic but it
works well; much better than Groupwise Messenger at my last employer.
This company of about 70 people sends a LOT of IMs daily.

In Software Development we referred to GroupWise as "group stupid"; we all
hated their email server.

SMS was one idea that I was going to work on as part of Kisspop but I have
wriiten a completely new SMS system that is just beginning to reap some
rewards.
