Code 39 is easy to recognize. It consists of 9 elements 3 of which are
wide. It always starts and stops like this
I___I_III_III_I
I'm using the I to represent the bar width, ie 3 mean 3 wide, and the _
to represent the spaces.
Can I send you an image of one? (Code 39)

I also created a bar code FAQ, years ago, with images of a whole bunch
of symbologies.

Question about your symbol scanner... I'm not very familiar with them...
Can you tell it which symbologies to scan? ie turn off / on different ones?
Often if they are programmable, you can turn on/off symbologies... could
your problems be this simple???
