I've been using the same set of MacBook batteries for years, a couple of
them for about 5 years now. When my Macbook runs out of power (2.5 +- hours
depending on what I'm doing) I hibernate it and swap batteries, putting the
discharged one in an external charger. I then unhibernate the computer and
continue working. About a minute downtime.

During work I frequently close the lid which suspends the computer (puts it
in standby). I don't think this has affected my battery life one bit. After
years of daily use, my batteries all still have probably 80% of their
original life left in them.
