There is one point that should be made clear. Snakes are not born, they are
hatched. In other words snakes form inside of an egg and are not attached by
an umbilical cord to the mother. That egg may be carried inside the mother
but the offspring are still hatched.
I think this point may have a bearing on whether a male is needed to
fertilize the egg. In higher order mammals reproduction is much more
complicated and we may not find virgin births.
