Though it was only an example, that would be handy, especially if there
would be a move to some more elaborate plot viewer (thinking of zooming and
scrolling, data-tips etc etc).

But the idea would be more general: I would have jconsole behave the same
(except for the IDE thing) as when running the IDE: show windows and so on,
unless it's not possible (no display server or whatever). Even better would
be a command line  (or configuration file) option toggling behaviour (For
instance, Matlab's -nodesktop option, disabling just the IDE, but allowing
for figures, plots, ... it separately checks whether there is a display
available or not).

Not to say we should mimic Matlab, but do improve uniformity of the
experience had with the different front-ends.
