Since my email client displays any unknown character with a question mark and I'm often too lazy to look directly at the forum archives, I can't begin to tell what output you want. None-the-less:
1) you could write your own boxing code. 2) Global parameters 9!:16 and 9!:17 control positioning of data within a box. And my favorite trick, 3) Use ": to convert the boxed display to literal data which then succumbs to normal j manipulations. For instance in the maze tasks we generate the maze grid using boxes, convert to text, which we modify to show the pretty maze. http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Maze_solving#J Note 'example of question mark blobs. Much worse in code since ? is a verb.'
