Since my email client displays any unknown character with a question
mark and I'm often too lazy to look directly at the forum archives, I
can't begin to tell what output you want. None-the-less:

1) you could write your own boxing code.
2) Global parameters 9!:16 and 9!:17 control positioning of data within
a box.

And my favorite trick,

3) Use ": to convert the boxed display to literal data which then
succumbs to normal j manipulations.
For instance in the maze tasks we generate the maze grid using boxes,
convert to text, which we modify to show the pretty maze.

Note 'example of question mark blobs. Much worse in code since ? is
a verb.'
