Unless you're dealing with a huge file, in J it's better to just read the 
entire file, using verbs from the standard library. See: 
http://www.jsoftware.com/help/user/lib_files.htm 

a=: 'b' fread filename

will read the file and noun a will contain a boxed list with one line per 
element
